Hawaii holds most of the world’s climates on eight islands: the wettest ground in the country on Waiʻaleʻale and a desert in the lee of Mauna Kea, snow on the summits and coral reef fifty miles away. The trade winds run the forecast three days out of four, and the exceptions are the whole story — Kona lows that flood one valley and miss the next, hurricanes that arrive off the Central Pacific with no land in the way, the winter swells that close the North Shore, and the vog that follows Kīlauea’s plume down the leeward coasts.
